Richmond Experiences Five Shootings in 24 Hours

April 10 through 12 proved a troubling weekend for citizens of Richmond. A day after Richmond police completed an outreach effort to speak with one of the city's most at-risk communities, five shootings broke out in several Richmond neighborhoods. While there have been no fatalities reported yet, there are six reported victims.

As CBS 6 reports, the shootings occurred over Saturday and Sunday of last weekend following a Richmond Police Department walk through Gilpen Court. Gilpen Court is considered one of the city's most "vulnerable" neighborhoods and a frequent site of violent crime. By 2pm on Sunday, April 12, five separate shooting incidents were reported—two of which occurring right inside Gilpen Court.

Richmond Police Major Steve Drew spoke with CBS 6 and asserted that the shootings are unrelated and that they are unfortunate. He was also emphatic about the general decline in local crime: there have only been 5 reported homicides in 2015, one of the city's lowest numbers in years.

A Variety of Crimes

The unrelated shootings this past weekend represent a number of serious violent crimes. All of incidents appear to have stemmed from a different set of circumstances.

Among the potential charges for offenders include:

The circumstances of these incidents are sure to become more clear as investigations continue and arrests are made. One thing, however, is for certain: if caught, these offenders face will face significant felony charges with harsh penalties.
